Recommended Reading
This is a very short list! When I came to consider which books I would recommend to teachers considering how to approach teaching people with learning disabilities, I realised that the number of useful books is very limited. Of course, there are hundreds more books about teaching music, as there are about the nature of learning disabilities such as Down syndrome and autism. But these are the few that I have found most relevant for pupils with learning disabilities. If you have any other suggestions of books to add to this list, please let me know!
Tuning in: practical psychology for musicians who are teaching, learning and performing. Handbook and home study course
This is a useful handbook for music teachers, students, and also the parents of students, including those with learning difficulties.
The Music Teacher's Companion: a practical guide
This is a valuable book for all instrumental teachers who wish to assess and improve their teaching skills.
The Practice Revolution: getting great results from the six days between music lessons

Alfred Piano Books for the Young Beginner A - E
These are ideal for a person with learning difficulties of any age who wishes to play the piano. I have used them successfully with adults as well as young people.

These books contain much imaginative material that will encourage improvisation and creative exploration of the piano keyboard, in a way that is accessible and fun.
