Improvisation Ideas
Creative improvisation is an important part of learning to play a musical instrument. Children with learning disabilities are often delightfully uninhibited when it comes to expressing feelings or painting pictures in music.
These are ideas that have worked well for some of my pupils with learning disabilities. Try to use stories or sounds that have caught the interest of the individual pupil and develop improvisations based on them.
All In a Day's Work
The inspiration for this extended improvisation was Grieg's ‘Morning'. My pupil enjoyed this melody and wanted to play it himself.
A Windy Day
I received three pictures in the post, especially drawn by 8-year-old Rhiannon to encourage my pupil to improvise on the piano.
The Storm
This is a good improvisation for a beginner who is just starting to explore the piano. The idea is to describe a storm in sound.
